How To

How can I get started in Base Jumping

Base jumping (also known as free-fall parachuting) is a sport where participants jump from fixed objects (usually cliffs), such as bridges, towers, buildings, etc., without any equipment attached to them. Jumping off an object is done by the participant. The parachute then helps them land safely. This is similar to skydiving except that you don't need to use a parachute and you don't have to wait for it to open.

The most common type of base jumper is called a wingsuit jumper. A wingsuit is two pieces of fabric joined together. The chest, arms and legs are covered by one piece and the legs by the other. The jumper wears special boots that allow him/her to stand upright during flight. Jumpers pull the straps that attach to their feet tightly during descent. The material covering the legs will bunch up and create a large pocket under the body. Once the air pocket has grown large enough, the jumper will open his/her parachut and land safely.

Some base jumpers use powered suits to help propel themselves through the air faster. The two main components to powered suits are a backpack filled with batteries and a undercloth that houses a jetpack. These small rockets fire small jets of hot-gas at high speeds. This creates thrust which propels the jumper forward. These suits can be quite loud and heavy.

BASE jumping can seem intimidating to some people. It is important to understand the risks involved in BASE jumping before you attempt to learn. There are several ways to die while doing BASE jumping: you could fall off a steep cliff, hit an obstacle head-on, upside down or collide with another jumper. Even though BASE jumping is not always dangerous, it can be very dangerous when done incorrectly. You can avoid injury by following these safety tips before trying to BASE jump.

Start by practicing safe BASE jumping techniques at a lower hill. You should always take a few minutes to get comfortable with the terrain before jumping off a larger one. Second, watch out for weather conditions. You should not jump when the wind blows in your face. Also, avoid foggy skies. If you see more than 10 feet ahead of yourself, then you might need wait until the cloud clears. Third, make sure you have the right gear. A helmet, goggles, gloves and a full-suit with a harness are all essential. Fourth, you should have a plan. Before leaving the ground, ask someone to follow you if something goes wrong. Never, ever jump alone. Always have someone with you.
